Comment on Rebuilding a Windows 7 Profile like you do in Windows XP by admin

Hi Benji,

That's because the "profile" is a file set in the users folder c:\users\%username%, thus...applicaiton settings aren't profile registry related but rather stored in the profile in various files and foldrs. The registry modification for rebuilding a profile only allows you to tell Windows Vista / 7 to rebuild the folder sets under c:\users\ folder for the respective users because you renamed their old profile to %username%.old. You could dig through that folder in the local profiles and copy that stuff over BUT if pieces of that are corrupt (which is why you want to rebuild the profile usually) you might end up copying the corrupted pieces over too.

If you wanted to try coying application settings over to your newly built profile try looking through "C:Users\%username%.old\AppData\Roaming" and copy stuff over to "C:Users\%username%\AppData\Roaming", see what happens when you log in as that user with the rebuilt profile.

This is great information. The problem is the registry entries related to applications don't exactly push over correctly when the profile is remade. I don't see why as the application install hasn't changed.. :S

So you know Nate sagesucksballs.com and .us are available for purchase, maybe you should buy them! I think you can also buy an extended hours support package but that's extra of course. I don't know of anyone that's ever bought one, that would be a good question too...has anyone bought extended hours support, needed it after hours and if so, how was the service? Way back when they first got their online support chat, for kicks (because I had nothing going on) I opted for the online support chat rather than the phone support and my wait was several hours, they weren't helpful. I've had better luck on the phone but I usually call right when they open the lines up otherwise I put in a ticket online and wait for a call back. I'd rather see the development steering committee take responsibility for the direction of the software, I doubt many of the executives know what they're doing when it comes to software development but rely on the VP of Application development for guidance. That's the person you want to hold responsible I'm sure. I still contend that the division making ACT does a much better job all around.

First of all I'd like to make a quick point

FUCK SAGE

These people are the worst! And yeah, maybe there's worse softwares out there, and maybe it's not as expensive as other similar software, but that no excuse. That's like saying "well this food doesn't taste that bad". It doesn't mean it's good. SAGE fucken sucks balls.

For the kind of money they charge and the kind of money they make, fucken fix your shit.

Heres another idea...24 hour support. Are you kidding me 8:30 to 8:30 EST, is that a joke? Especially when the average hold time is 2 and a half hours, plus another couple of hours for the technicians to pull their thumb out of their ass long enough to figure out your problem and help you.

Oh and here's another point of contention. If the SQL platform it's based on is so complicated to use....get off it. Use anything else for fucks sake.

How these people haven't been run out of the market is beyond me. EVERY SINGLE EXECUTIVE needs to be FIRED, and sent to prison, then be beaten daily by a disgruntled prison guard named Bubba and molested but their their prison mate Charles for the terrible things they've done to business all over the world.

Admin,
Some great points! But that comes with the turf really with IT support with anything.
I've seen some other really poor resellers and lousy customers. There is nothing more upsetting than a customer going against the advice you give them, causes a larger issue to fix, then complain when they get a bill.

IMHO, the SAGE Community is great. Sure, sometimes some people can get snippy on the forums. But, its free advice and/or tips. Like any other area you would post a question, if you post a polite and detailed question, you'll get better response. Look on the forums and see how many posts are "My SAGE is broken, whats wrong with it?" and you would be shocked.

Personally, I love it when my customers try to fix or do things on their own. I help them out. Doing an upgrade though can sometimes be tricky, we do them all the time so we are knowledgeable. If you do an upgrade yourself every year or 2, you might not know some of the latest tips/tricks and make a costly mistake, which you might not find out about months later. Which might end up costing more to fix than having your reseller doing the conversion in the first place.

I've used/worked on a lot of packages too: MAS90, MAS200, Great Plains, Financial Edge, Quickbooks, Peachtree, Answers on Demand, Achieve,....... I'm sure there's more too.

I have a client using MAS100 (recently upgraded from 90 to 100). My original beef I think (since I haven't read it in a long time) was not program functionality so much as it was poor customer service, thinking everyone but their "partners" are idiots, the elitist views of Sage and their partners, their lack of documentation (at the time) and a whole host of other complaints like server / system sizing, etc. They had no metrics on anything and didn't seem to know how to get them. They are bait and switchers (at the time) telling me for more than 10 users we'd need to upgrade to MAS200, when asked what the difference was between 90 and 200 all I got was mumbling, fumbling and bumbling finally saying...nothing really, there isn't much of a difference. <strong>Thus, make your MAS90 server a terminal server and save a boat load!</strong>

A lot of stuff from that original post has changed and the books I sent them about why software sucks and what you can do about it are still floating around the organization so maybe that's an influence. I'm not all about bitching how crappy stuff is, if I can influence positive change I'm all about it! :)

What irks me the most is the attitude in the Sage community and from Sage that those outside the organization or outside of their channel partner relationship (a.k.a. pay to play) aren't capable of installing their stuff or supporting it. They assume ignorance on behalf of others. This attitude from what I can tell is still strong; alive and well.

Try using Report Writer. I was inserting a comment field into a report, whereas with Crystal you can simply drag and drop that field, set it to grow, and voila! You are all set.
Report Writer? You need to create custom formulas to break down the comments into individual line, ie, comment line1, 2, 3, etc......and each can only be a maximum of I believe 50-80 characters. Heck, even just adding a field of text errors out 50% of the time.

How many companies use more than 1 form layout for Invoices, PO's, etc? Well, with GP, you can only have 1. If you want more than 1, you'll need to modify the launch icon to open a different reporting dictionary. This means, logout of GP, launch a different icon, then print invoices. How much time will this add to business processes?

No software will do 100% of what you want it to do. Heck, you can spend millions designing your own, but after it is all done it still won't do all that you want because your business processes would have changed.
But for the money, MAS is a great product. It won't do everything you want, but between using Crystal Reports, Custom Office (this lets you modify panels, add user defined fields and tables, custom scripts, etc) you can get it really close.
Check out the even the user forums for SAGE MAS 90 and then look at the forums for Great Plains users.

What ERP software are you currently using?

I think there were a few here mentioning the evils of Great Plains too. It's almost like asking if you're a Microsoft person or a Mac person (although now who cares). You like what you like. I can't say I've ever met anyone that has said Crystal Reports blows anything away so that's a first :-)

For all those bashing MAS90 saying how horrible it is, try using Great Plains for a period of time. You will quickly change your mind and believe it is the best program in the world.

The SAGE forums and knowledgebase are amazingly helpful. Good luck on the Great Plains sites! You'll be lucky to get a response that year.

SAGE's documentation blows away Great Plains too. Have you ever tried to create a custom or modify a report with Report Writer? You'll be all black and blue from slamming your head on your desk wondering how anyone could use such a horse crap program. Crystal Reports blows it away.

I'm unsure if it works with Zentyal. My guess would be yes. I'll have to try it and see. I haven't joined any machiens to a "Windows Domain" run by Zentyal yet. I had to write a logon batch file outside of the logon script because the machines were not joined to the domain. I'm not ready to do it in production yet. They have a mix of pro and home OS's (Windows 7 and XP). I've used ifmember on server 2012 and it still works.

"I think we can all agree that ERP software isn’t a self installer but it’s also certainly not rocket science to be lorded over by a special breed or class of people", easy now... I AM a rocket scientist! Figuring out the center of pressure and center of gravity is much easier (and fun) than fixing MAS 200 issues.

Our company started using Act! about 20 years ago, and it was terrific! Even Symantec's ownership did relatively little damage. Then Sage aquired the product. Sage is the most incompetent, unprofessional, and dishonest software company I have ever encountered.
Instead of fixing the defects in the current version of the program, they release an entirely new version for customers to buy. Act! users, hoping that the defects have been fixed, buy it. And are again disappointed.
My company is in the process of filing complaints with the U.S. Attorneys General office along with VA, AZ, OR, CA, GA, TX, and NY states Attoneys General, in hopes that pressure will be placed on Sage to end their dishonest practices.

Other than that, all we can do is spread the word to potential victims of Sage products.

The good news is that a group of companies is rapidly developing an alternative to Act! based on MySql.

Verified, works with Windows 7 (x86/x64) and Windows 8 (x86/x64) clients against Windows 2003, 2008 and 2008 R2 DCs. Have not tested against 2012 DCs but so far, most every Win32 utility does so I'd be surprised if this doesn't.

Hey Daniel - I don't have the step 1, step 2, step 3 for you at this very second and I'm assuming you know about group policy since you asked so...what you do is:

Create a new group policy for MSE
Right click and edit it
Under the: Computer Configuration > Policies > Windows Settings > Scripts (Startup/Shutdown) > double click "Startup" > click "add" > click "browse" > find your bat file.

* Often, I copy my bat file into the directory that opens.

I'd test it first before rolling it out to the masses ;-)
